Actually, it is more of a test; a two week test to be exact. The test is designed to see how your body functions and looks during the two weeks of <strong>eliminating</strong> those Carbohydrates from you daily eating. I can tell you first hand that I lost 7 pounds so far on the plan, which was shocking, since I have such LOW body fat to begin with. I noticed on day 2, that I had one of the largest bowel movements that I had ever experienced that lasted for about 30 minutes in duration. My focus and concentration have improved and I have noticed my energy was more consistent throughout the day. The most difficult part was going into my workouts, knowing I had NO carbs in me; however, I survived just fine and actually didn&rsquo;t feel that my performance dropped. I had one of my best spin bike sessions and motocross training sessions in a while. For now, I have another week of the test and then am pretty sure that I will transfer into a LOW carb, LOW to NO Gluten, LOW Sugar, LIMITED Dairy, eating plan. I am doing my research and will try to keep you posted throughout my journey. &nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Each year, more than 9.6 million adverse drug reactions occur in older Americans. One study found that 37 percent of adverse reactions in the elderly were not reported to the doctor, presumably because patients did not realize the reactions were due to the drug. This is not too surprising considering that most doctors admitted they did not explain possible adverse effects to their patients.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We based the following national estimates on well-conducted studies, mainly in the United States:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&bull; Each year, in hospitals alone, there are 28,000 cases of life-threatening heart toxicity from adverse reactions to digoxin, the most commonly used form of digitalis (drugs that regulate the speed and strength of heart beats) in older adults.2 Since as many as 40% or more of these people are using this drug unnecessarily (see discussion on digoxin), many of these injuries are preventable.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&bull; Each year 41,000 older adults are hospitalized&mdash;and 3,300 of these die&mdash;from ulcers caused by NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, usually for treatment of arthritis).3 Thousands of younger adults are hospitalized. (See list of drugs that can cause gastrointestinal bleeding.)</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&bull; At least 16,000 injuries from auto crashes each year involving older drivers are attributable to the use of psychoactive drugs, specifically benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants.4 Psychoactive drugs are those that affect the mind or behavior. (See list of drugs that can cause automobile accidents.)</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&bull; Each year 32,000 older adults suffer from hip fractures attributable to drug-induced falls, resulting in more than 1,500 deaths.5, 6 In one study, the main categories of drugs responsible for the falls leading to hip fractures were sleeping pills and minor tranquilizers (30%), antipsychotic drugs (52%), and antidepressants (17%). All of these categories of drugs are often prescribed unnecessarily, especially in older adults. (See section on sleeping pills and tranquilizers, antipsychotic drugs, and antidepressants; see also list of drugs that can cause hip fractures because of drug-induced falls.)</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&bull; Approximately 163,000 older Americans suffer from serious mental impairment (memory loss, dementia) either caused or worsened by drugs.7, 8 In a study in the state of Washington, in 46% of the patients with drug-induced mental impairment, the problem was caused by minor tranquilizers or sleeping pills; in 14%, by high blood pressure drugs; and in 11%, by antipsychotic drugs. (See list of drugs that can cause or worsen dementia.)</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&bull; Two million older Americans are addicted or at risk of addiction to minor tranquilizers or sleeping pills because they have used them daily for at least one year, even though there is no acceptable evidence that the tranquilizers are effective for more than four months, and the sleeping pills for more than 30 days.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&bull; Drug-induced tardive dyskinesia has developed in 73,000 older adults; this condition is the most serious and common adverse reaction to antipsychotic drugs, and it is often irreversible. Tardive dyskinesia is characterized by involuntary movements of the face, arms and legs. About 80% of older adults receiving antipsychotic drugs do not have schizophrenia or other conditions that justify the use of such powerful drugs, so many of these patients have serious side effects from drugs that were prescribed inappropriately.10 (See list of drugs that can cause tardive dyskinesia or other movement disorders.)</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&bull; Drug-induced parkinsonism has developed in 61,000 older adults also due to the use of antipsychotic drugs such as haloperidol (HALDOL), chlorpromazine (THORAZINE), thioridazine (MELLARIL), trifluoperazine (STELAZINE), and fluphenazine (PROLIXIN). There are other parkinsonism-inducing drugs as well, such as metoclopramide (REGLAN), prochlorperazine (COMPAZINE), and promethazine (PHENERGAN), prescribed for gastrointestinal problems.11 (See list of drugs that can cause parkinsonism.)</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&ldquo;A serious problem exists because both doctors and patients do not realize that practically any symptom in older adults and in many younger adults can be caused or worsened by drugs. Some doctors and patients assume that what are actually adverse drug reactions are simply signs of aging. As a result, many serious adverse reactions are entirely overlooked or not recognized until they have caused significant harm.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The drugs responsible for the most serious adverse reactions in older adults are tranquilizers, sleeping pills, and other mind-affecting drugs; cardiovascular drugs such as high blood pressure drugs, digoxin, and drugs for abnormal heart rhythms; and drugs for treating intestinal problems<strong>.&rdquo; &ndash; Dr. Jay Morgan </strong></p>

My alarm goes off this morning at 0500. &nbsp;&ldquo;YIKES!!!!!!! &nbsp;- Am I really going to a YOGA class with a room full of women? Is this really for macho manly men like myself?&rdquo;</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 150%;">Well, I did one full hour of Yoga with an amazing instructor named Pierra. She was extremely strict&nbsp;with her&nbsp;form. We did more strength exercises (primarily core), from what she tells me, than they typically will do in most YOGA classes. I was amazed at some of the 70+ year olds in the class that had better flexibility and stability than the 45 year old male to my right. Flexibility is a key ingredient to proper movement patterns!!! Have you ever wondered if you watched a person&rsquo;s gait (how they walk) from a distance (And you couldn&rsquo;t see the skin), what the difference would be between a 20 year old and a 70 year old? ANSWER: Nothing, if the 70 year old has flexibility, strength, good posture and stability. &nbsp;I explained to the instructor that I am an athlete and a Chiropractor, but although I have always been fit have struggled with flexibility and some of my movement patterns, in various athletic endeavors. She explained how YOGA would be just what the doctor ordered; no pun intended. I left there feeling looser, more relaxed with calmness and energy that was not&nbsp;with me before the class. Definately a great experience that I will continue. &nbsp;I regularly recommend YOGA to my patients / client because I believe it is one of the most powerful and cost effective investments for your health.</span></p>

ABA also claims there is "no association between high fructose corn syrup and obesity," but a long lineup of scientific studies suggest otherwise. </span><span style="font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">For example:</span></p>

<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #000000;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">* Dr. David Ludwig of Boston Children's Hospital did a study of the effects of sugar-sweetened drinks on obesity in children. He found that for each additional serving of a sugar-sweetened drink, both body mass index and odds of obesity increased. </span></p>

In the schools where the machines were removed, obesity stayed constant. In the schools where soda machines remained, obesity rates continued to rise. </span></p>

Ten weeks later, the volunteers had produced new fat cells around their hearts, livers and other digestive organs. They also showed signs of food-processing abnormalities linked to diabetes and heart disease. A second group of volunteers who were fed a similar diet, but with glucose replacing fructose, did not have these problems. </span></p>

Fructose is very hard on your liver, in much the same way as drinking alcohol.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 120%;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Insufficient sleep also impairs work performance and the ability to drive safely, found researchers for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which published two sleep studies March 4 in its <em>Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report</em>.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">"Over the last 20 years there has been a decline in overall sleep duration in adults," said lead author of one report, Lela McKnight-Eily, a clinical psychologist and epidemiologist at the CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Changing lifestyle habits, including longer workdays and late nights on the computer, have pared away much-needed sleep time, she noted. "Within our culture there seems to be a belief that sleep isn't a part of overall essential health," she said.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;"><strong>The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults sleep for seven to nine hours a night to maintain good health.</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">But when McKnight-Eily's team studied the sleep habits of 74,571 adults in 12 states, 35.3 percent reported sleeping less than seven hours.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">In addition, 48 percent reported snoring, 37.9 percent said they fell asleep at least once during the day the previous month and 4.7 percent admitted to falling asleep at the wheel at least once.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, drowsiness or nodding off while driving accounts for 1,550 deaths and 40,000 injuries a year.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Three percent of drivers in Illinois admitted to nodding off while driving the previous month, compared to 6.4 percent in Hawaii and Texas.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Hawaii also reported the highest number of people with poor sleep behaviors, the researchers noted.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">For the other report, a group led by Anne Wheaton, a researcher in CDC's division of chronic disease prevention, looked at the impact of sleep deprivation on the ability to perform daily activities.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">In that group, 37.1 percent reported getting less than seven hours sleep a night, and about one-quarter of these people said they had trouble concentrating. About 18 percent reported memory difficulties, and 8.6 percent said they were so sleepy during the day that it was hard to perform well at work.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">People who slept less than seven hours were more likely to have all these problems, compared with people who got seven to nine hours of sleep a night, the researchers said. Increasing sleep time would likely improve everyday functioning, they added.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Chronic sleep loss also is associated with obesity, increased risk of death and other health problems, notes the CDC, which released these studies in conjunction with National Sleep Awareness Week, March 7 to 13.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">For a good night's rest, people need to maintain a consistent sleep schedule and avoid stimulating activities like exercise close to bedtime, Wheaton said.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">"The bedroom should be conducive to sleep. Not too hot, there is not too much light, not a lot of noise -- so it's just a comfortable environment," Wheaton said.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">"Sometimes we just have to unplug," McKnight-Eily added. "Unplug the TV, unplug the radio, our BlackBerrys and computers."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Commenting on these reports, sleep specialist Dr. Shirin Shafazand said insufficient sleep "has an impact on how [people] perceive their quality of life, and their ability to concentrate, and their memory and learning skills."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Although all the benefits of sleep aren't known, studies have found it aids memory, learning and hormonal balance, which may be why lack of sleep is linked to obesity, added Shafazand, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">"It is clear that a lot of restorative activities are going on in the body during sleep," Shafazand said.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">"We have to make a conscious effort to pay as much attention to sleep as people do to other healthy activities like exercise and eating right, because they are all linked together," she said.</span></p>

That would indicate that even with advances in technology Americans are spending more awake hours thus reducing the hours of sleep. </span></span></p>
<p class="paragraph"><span class="textrun"><span style="font-size: 120%;">Good quality sleep is one of the cornerstones of health &ndash; too little (as well as too much) disrupts the circadian rhythms. This in turn can be detrimental to the body&rsquo;s ability to concentrate, perform daily tasks, memory, weight management and the overall health of the immune system.&nbsp; Lost sleep cannot be caught up, it is lost forever and a continual reduction in sleep has a cumulative far-reaching effect on health and well-being. </span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">In the past a typical whiplash injury, where no bones were broken, was hard to document. Soft tissue injury didn't show up on normal x-rays/radiographs and insurance companies would deny coverage. Literally adding insult to injury, the patient suffering all too real pain was considered to be a fraud, a liar, or at best a hypochondriac. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">New imaging devices (CAT Scans, Magnetic Imaging, and Ultra Sound) now show soft tissue injury and insurance companies now cover most whiplash injuries. When no bones are broken and the head doesn't strike the windshield,<span style="text-decoration: underline;"> typical symptoms are as follows: 62% to 98% complain of neck pain, which typically starts two hours up to two days after the accident.</span> This is often the result of tightened muscles that react to either muscle tears or excessive movement of joints from ligament damage. The muscles tighten in an effort to splint and support the head, limiting the excessive movement.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">66-70% of those suffering from whiplash complain of headache. The pain may be on one side or both, on again off again or constant, in one spot or more general. These headaches, like the neck pain, are often the result of tightened, tensed muscles trying to keep the head stable and, like tension headaches, they are often felt behind the eyes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Shoulder pain often described as pain radiating down the back of the neck into the shoulder blade area, may also be the result of tensed muscles.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Muscle tears are often described as burning pain, prickling or tingling. More severe disc damage may cause sharp pain with certain movements, with or without radiation into the arms, hand and fingers, which are relieved by holding your hand over your head.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 120%;"><strong>How Does Whiplash Happen?</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Whiplash is most commonly received from riding in a car that is struck form behind, or collides with another vehicle. When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth beyond its normal limits, the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine can be over-stretched or torn. In a rear end collision for example, the victim's car is first pushed or accelerated forward and then, because their foot is on the brake, or their car hits the vehicle in front, their car is rapidly slowed down, or decelerated. As the vehicle accelerates forward, it pushes the body forward too, but the head remains behind momentarily, rocking up and back, until some of the muscles and ligaments are stretched or torn. Too often the injury occurs before the head rebounds off the headrest.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">These muscles, in a reflex action, contract to bring the occupant&rsquo;s head forward again, and to prevent excessive injury. This overcompensates because at this point the head is already traveling in a forward direction as the car decelerates. This violently rocks the head forward, stretching and tearing more muscles and ligaments. The soft pulpy discs between the vertebrae can bulge, tear, or rupture. Vertebrae can be forced out of their normal position, reducing range of motion. The spinal cord and nerve roots get stretched, irritated, and choked. If the victim is not properly restrained the occupants head may strike the steering wheel or windshield, possibly causing a concussion.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Neuroscientists at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute in Wako, Japan, studied a group of professional and amateur shogi players. Shogi is the Japanese version of chess.<strong> With the use of real-time brain scans, the researchers discovered that the pros activated different parts of their brains than the amateurs did while studying game patterns and contemplating their next moves.</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">The findings were published in the Jan. 21 issue of <em>Science</em>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Senior study author Keiji Tanaka, deputy director of the institute and head of the Cognitive Brain Mapping Laboratory, said the experts' unique brain circuitry enabled them to have "superior intuitive problem-solving capabilities."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Professional shogi players, who have practiced three or four hours a day for several years, "repeatedly note that the best next move comes to their mind 'intuitively,'" the authors wrote. "Being 'intuitive' indicates that the idea for a move is generated quickly and automatically without conscious search, and the process is mostly implicit."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">"We assume that the players have developed the unique way to use brain circuitry through more than 10 years of deliberative training, but we have no data of brain activity in those people before they started the training," said Tanaka.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Tanaka and his colleagues studied 11 professional players and 17 amateurs, and identified two brain activations that were specific to the pros. First, both groups of players were shown different shogi board patterns as well as other scenes, but only the experts showed activation in a portion of the parietal lobe known as the precuneus. The other brain difference occurred when the players were forced to quickly pick their next best move. The professionals' brain scans revealed activity in a portion of the basal ganglion known as the caudate nucleus, while the amateurs' scans did not.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">The researchers suggest that a unique circuit between these two regions of the brain is what enables professional players to expertly recognize board game patterns and quickly choose their optimal next move.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">"There was no volume difference of the caudate nucleus between professional and amateur players," said Tanaka. This suggests that "the caudate nucleus is used for other purposes in ordinary people [but] the experts have developed a unique way to use the system."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Paul Sanberg, distinguished professor of neurosurgery and director of the University of South Florida Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair in Tampa, said the findings were intriguing, and noted that these same changes in brain circuitry might explain why people who repeatedly play other kinds of games, such as computer games, get better and better the more they play.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">"If you repeatedly practice any type of game that involves anticipating moves, and get so good at it that your responses are almost automatic, it might be due to a natural function of the brain," said Sanberg.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Sanberg added that the research might also have important implications for future medical treatments. "If you look at the areas of the brains that showed specific activity in the professional game players, these are the same regions that are involved in certain diseases, such as Parkinson's," he noted.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">"Anything that adds to our understanding about what these parts of the brain can do is important, and the hope is that we may be able to develop potential treatments to increase the activity in these areas if they're injured," Sanberg said.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">"Fish consumption in many countries, including the U.S., is far too low, and increased fish consumption would likely result in substantial benefits in the population," said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian of the Harvard School of Public Health, who reviewed the findings for Reuters Health.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">When choosing fish to eat, it's best to opt for fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, found most abundantly in fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and albacore tuna. "But any fish is better than none," Mozaffarian noted.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Indeed, these fatty acids likely underlie the benefits of fish on stroke risk, study author Dr. Susanna Larsson of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm told Reuters Health. "These fatty acids may reduce the risk of stroke by reducing blood pressure and blood (fat) concentrations."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">This is not the first study to suggest that people who eat more fish have a lower risk of stroke, and experts already recommend a fishy diet to reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems, Mozaffarian added. "This study supports current recommendations."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Earlier this year, for instance, a study showed that middle-aged and older men who eat fish every day are less likely than infrequent fish eaters to develop a suite of risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and stroke.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">In the current study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Larsson and her colleagues looked at 34,670 women 49 to 83 years old. All were free of cardiovascular disease and cancer at the beginning of the study, in 1997.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">During 10 years of follow-up, 1,680 of the women (4 percent) had a stroke.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Stroke caused by blockage of an artery that supplies blood to the brain -- also known as a "cerebral infarction" or "ischemic stroke" -- was the most common event, representing 78 percent of all strokes in the study. Other types of strokes were due to bleeding in the brain, or unspecified causes.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;"><strong>Women who ate more than three servings of fish per week had a 16 percent lower risk of stroke than women who ate less than one serving a week. "Not a small effect," Mozaffarian said in an e-mail, noting that it was roughly equivalent to the effect of statin drugs on stroke risk.</strong> Furthermore, the researchers asked women about their diets only once, using a questionnaire, which might have caused errors that would underestimate the link between a fishy diet and stroke risk, he explained. "So, the true risk reduction may be larger."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 120%;">Interestingly, women appeared to benefit most from eating lean fish, when other research shows fatty fish is better for health. This finding may stem from the fact that most fatty fish, such as herring and salmon, is eaten salted in Sweden, Larsson explained. "A high intake of salt increases blood pressure and thus may increase the risk of stroke," she said in an e-mail. "So the protective effects of fatty acids in fatty fish may be attenuated because of the salt."</span></p>]]></content></entry></feed>
